Before beginning an irrigation installation, assess the property carefully. Understanding these conditions first can help prevent uneven watering, runoff, overspray, and costly changes later.

1. Check the Property Layout
Start by reviewing the complete area that needs irrigation. The layout determines where pipes, valves, sprinkler heads, and irrigation zones should be placed.
Look for:
Lawns and planting beds
Trees and existing landscaping
Buildings and foundations
Driveways, sidewalks, and patios
Fences, walls, and other structures
Areas that receive regular foot or vehicle traffic

2. Examine the Soil Type

7. Inspect Drainage Conditions
Irrigation adds water to a property, so existing drainage conditions need to be understood first. Poor drainage can cause standing water, soil problems, and plant damage.
